5 Tips for a Successful Holiday Photo Session

If you ask this photographer, any time is a good time for family photos. There’s no denying, however, that the holidays are the most popular time of the year for families. With that in mind, here are 5 tips to make sure your holiday photo session is a smashing success.

1. Hire a professional

Call me biased, but I believe it pays to have a professional take your photos. You don’t want to end up in the “Awkward Family Photos” book. A professional understands lighting and composition, and will take photos you’ll actually want to share with your friends and family.

2. Spend a few minutes planning out your session

A wise man once said, “begin with the end in mind.” Take a few minutes to think about what you want before your session. What style of photos do you want? What will you do with the photos afterwards? This will help you determine a good location for your photos, and what to wear for the session.

3. Choose your outfits and lay them out the day before

Speaking of what to wear, I recommend you make this decision in advance. Work with your photographer to find a theme, and lay out each person’s outfit to make sure they coordinate.

4. Have incentives for your kids to behave

If you have younger children, create an incentive for them to behave during your session. Pick something you know they’ll like, and tell them they will only get it if they cooperate during the photo session.

5. Relax and have fun with it!

If you’ve taken the time to think things through and have a plan, you’re going to have a successful session. So relax, enjoy the experience, and just have fun as a family.
